overview Born in California in 1967, Auckland-based painter Cruz Jimenez has come a long way on the New Zealand art scene over the past two decades.

Cruz needed a new website that was at once effortless to navigate, visually engaging and aesthetically refined, all the while delivering an immersive, gallery-like experience to the viewer.
The work
We wanted the look and feel of this website to embody Jimenez's individuality and artistic vision, sparking an instant emotional connection with the user.
On the homepage, a headline serif font conveys a sense of gravitas and significance to the artists’ name, and a Mona Lisa-inspired micro interaction between Cruz Jimenez’ face and the user, where the face ever so slightly follows the direction of the mouse, provides an encapsulating effect. This dynamic interface was achieved through the use of WebGL to provide a 3D animation.

Our intention was to take the user on a journey, introducing the artist on the homepage and then inviting them into his private gallery, where the minimalistic black and white foundation throughout the site allows the art to always take center stage.

The artist's paintings are showcased to their best advantage, with the ability to zoom and pan providing a highly-detailed view of each work. Finally, custom integration with the Instagram API has been implemented to create a vertical carousel display of his latest posts.
